Does it feel like the wind blows right through your windows in the winter?
It’s a common problem in Connecticut homes—especially older ones. Poorly sealed and uninsulated windows let the cold seep in while heat leaks out, making you uncomfortable and driving up your energy costs.
Luckily, there are ways to fix drafty windows, and it could be more affordable than you think.
Why Are Your Windows Drafty?
Drafts around windows happen for a few main reasons:
1. Air Leaks
Over time, the caulking or weatherstripping around your windows can break down, leaving tiny gaps for outside air to blow through.
2. Single-Pane Windows
Many older homes in Connecticut have old single-pane windows, which are not insulated and let heat seep right out.
3. Poor Installation
If you have newer windows and they’re still drafty, they may not have been installed correctly. Poor installation can leave small gaps around the window trim that let the cold air in.
The Best Ways to Fix Drafty Windows
There are several ways to stop window drafts. The best solution depends on what’s causing the problem, but we typically recommend:
1. Sealing Around the Frame
If there are small gaps around your window frames, sealing them will make a big difference.
Air sealing is included with your $75 co-pay when you schedule a Home Energy Solutions (HES) visit. If you qualify for Home Energy Solutions-Income Eligible (HES-IE), you can receive no-cost air sealing!
2. Installing Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is a rubber-like material that’s used to fill gaps around window and door frames. It’s one of the easiest and most affordable ways to stop drafty windows.
3. Replacing with Triple-Pane Windows
If your windows are very old, warped, or single-pane, window replacement is usually the best solution. Modern ENERGY STAR®-certified triple-pane windows are heavily insulated to keep drafts out, and can save $125 to $465 per year on energy costs. Learn more about when you should replace your windows.
We can help you claim a $100 rebate per window when installing new ENERGY STAR®-certified triple-pane windows. Income-eligible customers may qualify for even greater savings, up to 100% off new windows.
